Hi Kent:

Thanks for getting back to me.  I love the stairs that you have built and the way you think. I’m in the process of doing my own stairs but had never thought of scribing and cutting the treads, not the stringers. I’m like you and have to do all the research and get comfortable before I whittle.  It’s measure five times before cutting.

I would appreciate any information that you could pass my way. Have a few questions if you don’t mind? I was thinking of building a jig similar to your original thought, doing one tread at a time, leveling the tread in both directions horizontally positioned then measure for the proper scribe. It appears from your photos that you built a full size jig. I would like your thoughts since you have been there. I’m also concerned about the thickness of the tread at the back by the stringer; did you have to cut into the stringer? I also have a different situation than you and would like your input. Where the stringer meets my floor I’m thinking of cutting a birds mouth which locks the stringer, but am afraid it might create the start of a major split. I could cut the stringer parallel to the floor and then bolt up through the floor. What’s your thought?  If you have any additional photos especially close-ups that might help me visually I would greatly appreciate them.  Any help is good help.

 Thanks again:

P.S. This is an exact copy of what I have sent ??? some whare two days ago???I'm new at this stuf and don't know what I'm doing
