Thanks Pat...interesting you should mention being on limited budget and fixed income....we have some friends who we met in the process of building who were planning on building their log dream on a lakefront lot not far from us. Like you, they had just retired and only had a certain amount they were able to spend on the building...once we tallied up all the bills and saw our final figure we passed it along to them and they immediately backed out of the deal. They had gone as far as buying the log package and it was being assembled at the builder's lot. But they knew they couldn't get into more than they had budgetted. We felt bad but they reassured us we had done them a favour by sharing our costs with them...they are now building a Home Package that's 1/2 the cost. They were disappointed as this had been their dream for a long time but so appreciative they didn't get in over their heads...the problem with living in such a rural area is you have limited contractors from which to choose...they know they're the only game in town and price their services accordingly. We ended up going to the US for our appliances, our taps, toilets, vanities because of prices (at that time our $$$ was par)...and that provided a good chunk of savings...but, now that we're here of course we do love it and will be sad to say goodbye...please keep us up to date on your building and if we can provide any advice or support, we'll gladly do so...we only wish we had found this site before we started to get a better idea of what we were about to do! I think you sholud look for a company the specializes in dry ins, and let you builder complete the project from there.
