Not yet, but we are very close to achieving our dream. Just looking for the right opportunity and land. For those who may know of some different ideas out West would be appreciated. We were thinking Durango, Co. for instance, but are willing to look and listen.

12-24 months

To get a "log kit" or NOT??

My wife are in the early stages of our great adventure of having our dream log home built. Our dilemma is whether to buy a "log kit" or hire a log home architect designer and General Contractor builder to begin our process?? I am curious as to who out there has taken the latter road to there dream or know someone who has taken on the task of obtaining an architect designer and a General Contractor to build there dream log home. I am sure most of you out there has used one of the various… Continue

I found the google tool: .
Also, the log home consultant I used was actually a builder I couldn't afford but he did such beautiful, meticulous work that I wanted to make sure he had input on my design and that he had our crew started off right. If you would like his info, you can email me at shelleyupnorth at gmail dot com. Have fun at the Expedition Open House!

Thanks for the kind words. We designed the house in conjunction with our handcrafted log provider, and the designer helped me do the best with what I wanted to accomplish. I am the GC, but I have a co-GC who is the primary to get labor and I do all the supplies. I've said many 10s of Thousands of dollars by researching and getting the supplies myself, as the GC will mark up at least 10% getting the supplies and doesn't spend as much time and cannot get what you want without you working along side them. It is easy to be the supplier, in my opinion, and we used the Direct Buy membership to save on: windows, cabinets and the rock siding.

Log Home kit or not. There are several factors, as you know, the biggest to me is "what do you want to live in for the time you own it, which begs the question, what is the intent of the log home, and will you ever sell it?" We plan to own and live in ours as a retirement home with no plans to sell, so we are building exactly what we want within a realm of what we can afford. Also, how quickly do you need to have it completed? Can you pay for both current living costs and those of the log home? If so, you have more time...we're entering our 3rd year of construction because we know what we want and can afford taking our time.
