Solar electric cost calculator

The following is a web site that allows you to calculate the cost of putting in solar power for a given % drop in your electric bill as a function of your zip code. I can't vouch for the accuracy of its findings but in running it for my home it seemed pretty accurate from what I have read. Right now solar power seems to cost about 4 times more per kilowatt to produce then the power line. We pay a little over $.10 per KW in Florida. Some solar panel company out West claims to have made a…

Green Energy Savings for Log Homes, Post and Beam Homes, and Timber Frame Homes

Congress has just given a generous boost to homeowners who want to convert their homes to solar energy or cut their electricity bills with a wind turbine. The "Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008" (the 2008 Energy Act), which was enacted on Oct. 3, 2008, contains tax breaks for homeowners who invest in a home solar-power system or small wind turbine. These tax breaks, when combined with… Continue

Off grid system

I'm starting to plan my dream. Handcrafted, somewhere around 1800 sq ft. My property is off grid. I want to be as green as I can. I'm in northern Mn. My hope is geothermal and radiant floor heat, but I'm told that a solar/wind/battery system isn't enough to run the geothermal. There's gotta be a combo out there that will work. Perhaps adding an LP generator? I'm also looking into an outdoor wood boiler for the in floor heat? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts? Thanks,
