A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. ~Henry David Thoreau

How has winter been treating you this season? We've been pummeled in northern Michigan. In the area where our log home is located, we are well over 150 + inches of total snowfall. Today was -26 degrees! Ouch! Our Bernese Mountain Dog named Scout is loving it. I have to practically pick her up to carry her into the house because she doesn't want to come inside. Me? I'm ready for Spring. Bring it!…

Time for an Autumn check. Northern Michigan is at 50% peak right now so I should have better photos in the upcoming weeks. Is there anything better than a log home decorated w/ fall leaves and pumpkins?! I think not! Here's what it's looking like in our neck of the woods. How about yours? (P.S. I have found I cannot buy enough pumpkins to decorate our log home. My hubby is grumbling that I am turning our place into a pumpkin patch. Ha!)…

Having a great summer so far at our log home. It's been 3 years, the projects don't end but the wondrous moments continue including seeing a fox for the 1st time and having my Loons return to our lake. I've shared some photos below. What is happening at your log home?…

I'm looking forward to heading up north to spend Christmas in our log home! The place is decorated! Two feet of snow is already on the ground in northern Michigan! I've made tons of homemade treats! Which reminds me, have any you checked out www.allrecipes.com
? Great site! I just made some Amish Caramel Corn the other day that came out fabulous. I'm also making homemade banana sourcream bread and chocolate pretzel sticks. Are you making… Continue

This is my favorite time of year at our log home. Crunchy, colorful leaves, bonfires w/ marshmallows, and pumpkins all over the deck. I don't know of any other home that looks better in the fall season than a log home. Here's what it looks like right now in my neck of the woods. (How does it look by you?)…

I couldn't imagine having a log home without our puppy and kitty. They seem to complete our log home and make it that much more enjoyable.
Our cat Marvin loves climbing our log staircase and perching himself high in the loft as he hisses at our new Bernese Mountain puppy Scout. Scout loves the outdoors (what dog doesn't) and has been… Continue

It took me 4 years, 6 months and 2 days to convice the hubby that we needed a dog. Once we finished our log home last year, I told him it wasn't complete without a "log dog" - his answer "what about our log cat?" No worries - Marvin the cat is still loved (and he LOVES dogs) so now he'll have a companion.
Next hurdle was the KIND of dog to get. Greg wanted a hunting dog - Pointer, Brittany Spaniel, etc. But then I pointed out he… Continue

I think one of the things that helped us with designing our log home was asking current log home owners what they were glad they did with their log home and if there was anything they would change if they could go back. I love my log home but still, knowing what I know now - there would still be a few things I would modify. I invite all log home owners on this forum to list 3 things that they felt were the best things (design, research, etc)… Continue

Our log cabin is our vacation home (a.k.a. 2nd home) in northern Michigan. For those of you not familiar with Michigan terms, if you are NOT from northern Michigan and you VISIT northern Michigan - then you are a Fudgie (cuz tourists like to buy fudge on Mackinac Island) or a trunk slammer (cuz when you drive up to the cabin after work on Friday, all the locals can hear you slamming your trunk after you've pulled up into your… Continue

Marvin the cat loves our trips up to our log home as much as we do! Seriously. If you saw how well he behaved in the cat carrier (no violent banging against the sides!) - you would believe me. But I have noticed that he has claimed ownership of our log home. I submit the following as proof!
Here Marvin is inspecting the logs with his teeth. Yep! Good enough for him!
This is his couch. If you're lucky, he might let you have… Continue

It has been 16 days since I've been up at our log home! Why do you ask? I got very sick and hospitalized with the flu. Kind of put a damper on the holidays. I think I drove everyone nuts at the hospital - I kept telling the nurses "I'm suppose to be at my log home right now!" And then I was telling them about the birds around my log home and how I had it decorated for Christmas, and then they were saying "but how do you feel?" I'm not at my log home - I feel pretty bad right… Continue

Besides spending time decorating the heck out of our log home, I've been trying to do more crafty things since the holidays are fast approaching. I enjoy bird watching and seeing all the different birds that come to visit us. I decided my birds needed their own "edible" christmas tree and decorated a pine tree on our property w/ strung cranberry and popcorn as well as the famous pine cone feeders (smeared w/ peanut butter and rolled in seeds.)
For the pine cones feeders - gather some… Continue

This is what I woke up to on Sunday morning. I think the first dusting of snow is the most beautiful! I am breaking out the Christmas music (okay, I have a confession to make - I made a mix of the Transiberian Orchestra Christmas music and I have been playing it since Halloween. My husband has now offered to pay me not to play it anymore.) - need to get hot chocolate and then start piling up on those Christmas decorations! I've got big outdoor… Continue

A while back Greg and I had decided to name our log home 'The Loons' Nest.' This was due to the loons on our lake and because I just love this bird! I wanted to put up a sign outside our log home to make it official and have been looking at many sign companies. I decided to go with Matthew Henry's Lodge and Cabin Signs
. He has a great selection and his prices are very reasonable.… Continue

Greg & I are in Chicago at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center to exhibit for Hiawatha Log Homes at the Log & Timber Frame Expo. Everyone is busy setting up their booths and we had a chance to walk around and see some great stuff! Check out these photos:…

Has anyone else started decorating their log home for Autumn? I'm sure I'm like the other "mid westers" as we love seeing the leaves change, it's football season (private note to Shad - I'm not sure what the Detroit Lions are doing would be called football!). And I think the log home is just the perfect place to get in the fall mood! I've been shopping a little crazy (my husband is cringing and asking how many "fake" pumpkins can a girl buy? And… Continue
