6 Lawn Maintenance Tips for a Perfect Lawn All Year Round

Caring for a green and spotless lawn is a matter of pride. A lush, well-kept lawn can make improve the appearance of your home. From time to time, however, extra care may be required to ensure optimal condition. Follow our care tips to improve the condition and appearance of your lawn throughout the year.

1. Test the Soil

You need to work from the bottom to the top in order to get a healthy lawn. This means you will want to start every spring with a soil test. The grass grows best on neutral pH (about 6.5 on the pH scale). Use a clean, stainless trowel to collect samples from up to 10 lawn areas. You can test your soil with a home soil testing kit. The kit can provide the much-needed accurate pH measurement in the garden and the lawn. This kit not only provides an accurate reading, but it also contains detailed recommendations on the pH value of over 400 plants.

2. Install a Better Yard Drainage

If there are drainage problems in the yard, standing water will not only damage the grass and plantations but can also pose a health risk. As any good landscape drainage contractor would tell you, a poor drainage system prevents oxygen from making its way into plant roots, which eventually causes root death, damages decorative plants, and threatens the foundation. One of the best ways to remove water from a low point is simply to drain it through an underground pipe.

3. Aerate the Soil

Aeration is often the first and most important process in treating a plant. Aeration can make a lawn healthier and reduce maintenance by improving air exchange between the soil and the atmosphere. In aerating a soil, the soil is drilled to create small holes so that air, water, and nutrients can penetrate the roots of the grass.

Soil aeration is usually done using a spike aerator or plug aerator. Most lawn care professionals recommend using plug aerator because puncturing the soil with spikes can lead to increased soil compaction. The best time for soil aeration is the growing season when the grass can heal and fill open spaces after removing the soil plugs.

4. Mow Your Lawn Regularly

As in spring, the grass grows faster in the summer months. That is why weekly mowing is important to prevent overgrowth and to maintain a good lawn. Start mowing at the first signs of growth, but you will want to mow a little shorter than normal cutting height. Don’t forget, you should remove cuttings from the first mowing in case of fungal disease. If you have a lot of worm casts on the lawn, clean them before mowing because constant contact with the soil will quickly dull them and lead to poor mowing.

5. Water Your Lawn Wisely

Watering your lawn is one of the most important aspects of caring for your lawn. Your lawn needs at least 1 inch  to 1.5 inches of water per week throughout the year, even in winter. Make sure to water your lawn deeply about two to three times a week, if your water bill allows it.

The amount of water and duration of each irrigation period should be adjusted depending on the type of soil and the type of grass. By increasing the cutting height, moisture is also collected. The absolute best time to water your lawn is in the early morning. Cooler temperatures and a calm breeze reduce evaporation significantly.

6. Smother and Replace Your Lawn With Mulch

If your neighbour seems to have a lush, green lawn that never rakes or removes rubbish, he/she probably uses mulching. Mulching isgood for the lawn in many ways. Whether you mulch the leaves or throw grass debris back onto the lawn, mulching saves time and money; it is also a great soil improvement technique. You should probably mow once a week during the mowing season. You don't want to cut the grass too much or damage it so that it doesn't become too big for the clipping volume.

Your lawn and garden have the best chance of looking green and full if you maintain them throughout the year. A well-tended lawn almost always provides 100% more than the initial investment. A beautiful-looking lawn increases the attractiveness of your home and creates an inviting space for outdoor activities such as sports, cooking, or simply relaxing in the afternoon. With a little effort and time, you can create the perfect lawn and easily maintain it throughout the year.
