The Log Home Neighborhood

An online log home community for log home enthusiasts.

There's something magical about the outdoors in the summertime. Having essentially grown up on lakes, I always seem to associate the months of July and August with boating, tubing and water skiing. I find solace relaxing on a deck, and listening to the sounds of fish jump in and out of water. And, of course, watching fireflies circulate through the air.

Everyone should have these kinds of safe havens where they can kick back, especially at a cabin. For some it may be a simple outdoor bistro setup where they can enjoy a cup of coffee and the newspaper in the morning. Others may prefer a lounge area where they can take in smells and sounds of the surrounding property. We help you create your ideal design in our outdoor-living-centric August 2013 issue.

Certain aromas or sounds can be particularly relaxing in an outdoor setting. We provide four steps to creating a "sensual sanctuary" in which you and guests alike can enjoy an ultimate outdoor experience in our Landscapes department. Decor plays a large role in how cozy a setting is as well. We talk to interior designer Jodi Klatt for ideas on dressing up your outdoor space for style, comfort and functionality in our Decor department.

Where you choose to build your cabin also will factor heavily into your cabin lifestyle. George and Marlyn Curnow sough out lakefront property because of their love of the water. "The magic of the water has us thoroughly seduced," George states. Sofie Pilotte and her husband, Michel, were adamant about finding the perfect countryside cabin where their children could experience "fresh air and the beauty of the outdoors," she says. We share their stories, as well as recommendations for your own property search. Be sure to check out George and Marlyn's detailed building diary as well.

Wherever your comfort zone is or will be, we encourage you to tell us about it through submissions to our Reader Logbook. Email us a with pictures and details about your favorite spots to relax.
