The Log Home Neighborhood

An online log home community for log home enthusiasts.

It took me 4 years, 6 months and 2 days to convice the hubby that we needed a dog. Once we finished our log home last year, I told him it wasn't complete without a "log dog" - his answer "what about our log cat?" No worries - Marvin the cat is still loved (and he LOVES dogs) so now he'll have a companion.

Next hurdle was the KIND of dog to get. Greg wanted a hunting dog - Pointer, Brittany Spaniel, etc. But then I pointed out he doesn't hunt that much (it's kind of hard when you have a wife who is a die hard animal lover and cries over a crushed ladybug - ha!) But I really wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog and had been in love with the breed for a long time. So I said - "let's just go SEE the puppy...."

All I had to do was get that puppy in his arms. The puppy played it perfectly for her part. She snuggled against him, locked her eyes with his and then licked his hand. He was a goner! (See photo above. Smart girl!) Our Bernese girl will get between 70-90 pounds and is classified under the working dog breeds. We're still thinking of names...

All you dog lovers out there, be sure to check out Tom Heatherington's beautiful fur babies as well as the group he started at Log Dogs, Cats & Critters at http://www.loghomeu.com/group/logdogs . I'd love to see your log pets too!

Shelley, I just joined today and have loved your blogs.(Mind you, I've never joined anything-myspace,facebook, twitter, or any of it!) Our cat also takes full possesion of our log home in NC when we are there:) We are trying so hard to sell our Florida house so we can retire and live full-time in the mtns. This has been a childhood dream for me. My favorite thing is looking at the house lit up at night too-reminds me of a Kincaid painting. Lucky you, realizing your dream much younger than me:)

AWWWWW! When you pick her up on the 27th, are you taking her right to the cabin? She may not want to leave! Have a wonderful time with your perfect new addition - keep us posted on a name!

Jill & Vic,

I am looking thru your photos and your cat is pretty identical to my cat!! Cute! love all your dogs - they are such beauties! And nice to meet someone else who has a love for this breed. A dog shower is smart and I'm thinking we need to add one to our walkout basement! How do you take them all for a walk??? :-) By the way - I'm glad to hear that you have Custer at 12 years old - I've been told that the Bernese typically live between 7-10 yrs of age.
Please keep in touch with me!!

Shelley,
congrats on your new pup.We have 3 bernese :Custer 12, Libby 8, and now Bridger who will be 11 weeks tomorrow. Although we still live in the UK, we are building a log home in Maine. We have tried to design it with big dogs in mind and are putting a dog shower in the walkout basement.Atleast Bridger will be through his teething by the time the house is finished. At the moment I reckon he could chew through an 8 inch log....

Got to love them though.

Best wishes,
Jill and Vic Povey
I can't figure out how to upload pics on this blog yet, but you can see our pups, and our house foundations at http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/JILLANDVIC

Chantal - Thank you so much! She has my hubby in a mush pile! Ha,ha!

Shelley S - Thank you! She is similiar to Marvin with the white chest especially! We've decided to name her "Scout" from one of my favorite books - To Kill A Mockingbird.

Shelley, She's absolutely 'Precious'! I find it a little endearing that she's almost the same colors as Marvin. Did you do that on purpose? I'm sure she's going to be a well behaved "spoiled" addition to the family. Funny thing about big dogs.......after reaching full size, they still think they're lap dogs and I'm sure she'll be no exception. But how could you ever refuse a face like that.

Congrats on your new baby!!! BTW....have you selected name yet?

Thanks Shad! We get to pick her up on June 27th and I'm counting down the days. You sure you don't want to show your wife a photo? how about this one? :-)

There is no way I can let my wife see this photo. She'll drag me off to find a new puppy, and we already have enough animals!

Very cute puppy Shelley! Congratulations on the new addition to the family :)

Call her "Yellehs" your name backwards. It will make it simple since you will be doing lot of yelling anyway.
