Profile

Tell us about yourself:
My husband & I are avid outdoors people. We recently realized our dream of building a log home in Northern Michigan. For now it's our vacation home but who knows what the future will bring. We put together a blog documenting our experiences: www.logcabininmichigan.blogspot.com .

I recently became a representative for Hiawatha Log Homes. I can't think of anything better than helping others with their log home dream as well as talking about log homes everyday! If I can help you, please contact me!

Are you lucky enough to be living in a log home?
Only on the weekends for now.....heavy sigh!

A Responsibility to Mother Nature

Now that my husband and I are log home owners, we are feeling even a greater sense of responsibility to nature and wildlife. Have you felt that too? Is there anything more hauntingly beautiful than the call of loon across the lake at dusk? I have fallen in love with the loo… Continue

Outdoor Lighting

I always had that dreamy vision of what my log home would look like lit up at night. I'm coming in from the lake on my boat (I don't have a boat yet but stick with me), pulling up to the dock and seeing my nicely lighted cabin like a beacon in the sky! Or it's winter, snow h… Continue

Wildlife around the Log Home

I think considering that a majority of log homes are in scenic locations (lake, mountains, etc.) - there is just so many great opportunities to view all the different wildlife. It's just better somehow to view it around your log home in my opinion. Here are a few photos of my new friends. Looking forward to seeing other log home member's "friends" as well! P.S. The elk is actually part of a fenced herd nearby to us.

Log Home is stained!

Our log home is finally stained! And we had help from our builder Randy - well actually, he did everything! Hubby was traveling and I as the wifey was starting to freak out at the weather exposure to the logs so we made an executive decision to have the builder do it - especially as it had finally stopped raining in Northern Michigan. If you would like to view more photos, please visit my blog at www.logcabininmichigan.blogspot.com . (Thanks to everyone who gave me so many great tips - it was ni… Continue

Shelley, I just wanted to stop by and let you know how much I enjoy reading your blogs/comments here and those on your own blog. It helps to connect with other people who are in or recently have been in the same stage of building. I only wish I had kept a more detailed record of our progress thus far. Thanks and keep the info/updates coming! Anne

You are clearly a genius, Shelley. The only thing I worry about with the scavenger hunt idea is that it may not give a level playing ground to everyone (if they don't have access to the site at time of promotion, etc. etc.) But I think there is a huge amount of merit to the idea. I wonder how we can tie that in to something. I've got to talk to the circulation folks, but maybe we could offer up something for everyone who completes it...

I've got a couple other ideas, too. Perhaps we can continue this brainstorm via email?

Brian / Kathy - I live in Michigan. I will be at the Chicago Log & timber show in October as a representative for Hiawatha Log Homes. I have heard so many great things about N. Carolina. One of our friends is trying to sell a spec home they bought in Asheville.

Hi,
Is Larry's bar still there in I believe in Waters. My friend had an A Frame right in the area where your new log home is. We used to snow mobile up there all the time until it stopped snowing for quite a few years. Nothing like running 50 mph when its 25 below. We have an old aquaintence up there named Jim powers. He is a true backwoodsman and was building log homes for awhile. I have followed your articles on the other site I mentioned as well as your personal site, very nice.

Shelley - I love the idea. We're looking in to adding "Poll" functionality. We have it for the Admin, but not yet for Community Members (which we think would be cooler, anyway). I'll certainly keep you posted on our progress. I think we'll unveil it soon, but we wanted to "tie" it to something - like maybe a giveaway to a random person who answered.

The other thing we're thinking about is a "Blog For It" contest - and I'm curious to know your thoughts on this. The basic premise (for anyone reading) is we have a prize, and we'll give it to the community member who gets the most comments on one of their blog entries for a certain time period (2 weeks, a month?). What are your thoughts on that? Think it has any merit? I think it might get some nice conversation going. Maybe we should do "Photo of the Month" or something instead.

Either way, the gears are churning over here. What do you think?

Jeff & Barb - that lot sounds like us w/ big trees blocking part of our lake view in the summer - however we had a big storm recently that knocked down some large limbs that I posted on my log home blog.

We are truly looking forward to starting our new home, for Barb and I it will be our retirement home. We are hopefully going to put our house up for sale this fall and as soon as we sell, we can start building our retirement home. The Canadian Lakes area is beautiful, we have lots of deer and turkeys all around our property, we will have views of a lake in the fall and winter months, but blocked by trees and leaves in the spring and summer. I'm sure the area you are in is beautiful also, we love going up there to camp and play golf.

We do live in Big Rapids, Michigan, our property is out in the Canadian Lakes area south east of Big Rapids. We will not be posting a picture of our lot right away, possibly after we get it cleared and ready to build on. Where in Northern Michigan are you?

Hi Shelley, Thank you for the compliment. Please post more pictures of your home. It is beautiful. Love the steps. Wish we had done our steps that way. Congratulations on your new endeavor. How fun! Working with log homes all the time! Good Luck! Keep in touch! Alexis
