All-American Fun

I just traveled back in time. At least it felt like it. My husband, daughter and I just returned from an extended 4th of July weekend at his aunt and uncle's lakeside vacation house at Indian Lake, Ohio. On the 4th itself, 14 of us gathered for an old-fashioned family picnic, where we chowed down on burgers and watermelon, played lawn games (I learned the art of "cornhole"--a beanbag-toss game that's all the rage… Continue

Living (kind of) Like Ed

Some call him a radical, some call him an extremist, some call him a freak—I call him a visionary. I'm talking about Ed Begley Jr., TV personality, actor and activist who's one of the most recognizable faces in the "green" movement and has been for 30 years—long before it was cool. In the July 2008 issue of Log Home Design, Ed chatted with us about building a green log home, but I had the great pleasure to meet him live and in person during the 2008 Earth Day celebration on the Mall in W… Continue

The Hat Lady

When I took my promotion as Log Home Deisgn editor-in-chief a little more than two years ago, I knew my new post would require me to wear many hats: writer/editor (a position I was as well versed in), manager (a new one to me), keeper of the purse strings (years of household budgeting prepared me for this one) ... but emcee??? That wasn't exactly in the initial job description. Yet, at our dinner gala for the recipients of our 2nd Annual Log Home Design Awards held in Orlando on March 8, that's… Continue

Good Morning Donna from your new friends, Ted and Bonnie Steele (Mountain Venture Properties LLC). Still working on the sale of our home (see photo) here in Bradenton, FL and like our common friend Ted in Sarasota it looks like things are looking a little brighter in real estate market. My agent has sold a few homes lately in the area and more rentals and Leases with option to purchase too. We have our NC business established and need to be on site to really get things going. My virtual office is receiving more calls lately re: fractional log home ownership, and property management services which are the basis of our NC venture. Our mountain top (see photo) property awaits and our dream is still alive! Have a blessed week.... Ted & Bonnie

Hi again. Things at my end haven't changed a heck of a lot regarding the sale of my house. But in the last few days I have heard some comments that give me some hope. First, Michael Saunders Realtors, after months of bad news has now stated that the Sarasota market inventories are down and that prices seemed to have stabilized although they are still low. Additionally, I spoke with the manager of my local Home Depot who told me that customers are more optimistic about their house sales then they have been in the past several months. Of course the economy in general still sucks and until we see some stabilization in that quadrant we won't see much improvement.
Having said all that my wife, Marilyn and I have decided to bite the bullet and put our house on the market in the fall of 2009. We will take the best offer that comes along. Then onward and upward ... literally ... our property is in the North Carolina mountains.
Catch ya soon,
Ted

Hey Donna, I see we are going to be friends. Great! I look forward to reading about log home living from your perspective. In your position as Log Home Design Editor-In-Chief you can (no will) bring an enlightened point of view to the kind of stuff that most of us are hungry for.

Bring it on.

Hi, Donna....yes, busy, but joyful! This life has so many adventures! I'm about to move from Frankfort, IL to Saint John, Indiana...a beautiful old golf course that was developed as a subdivision...huge trees, lots of greenway, and my new townhome is 1 block from the 40-acre lake! And there is an awesome timber frame home right on the lake! (Talk about inspiration!)...anyway, thanks for your kind words....and I'm very excited to have found this community! :)

Our original log home was a 700 square feet cottage built in 1940. It was a sweet little two bedroom place but every spring when we opened it up it was leaning more and more off of it's rock supports. Because of the giant stone fireplace, we couldn't jack it up to put a basement on it and the size of our lot prevented us from adding on the either side in any meaningful way. The cottage had very rudimentary finishes but it was charming. Hard as we tried, we could not come up with a way to utilize it into a larger home that we could entertain in and later retire to. So, the decision was made to demolish it and design a new house. We did keep some of the logs and will use them as accent logs and to build a bar with them in the game room of the new house. Tearing down the old house was very bittersweet...we were super excited about our new house but really sad to see the old cottage go. We had so many builders and log experts look at it and no one could come up with a way for us to save it. I am keeping a blog of the construction at http://deepcreeklakelogs.com . I really have enjoyed every minute of my log home research and I can't wait to decorate this new house!

Hi Donna,
I became hooked on log structures back in 1991 while taking a course at Villanova on historical architecture. Being a second generation antique dealer and working with many interior designers I am surprised how many people miss the mark when trying to furnish their log homes. I would like to see log home shows expanded in the area of furnishings getting tired of seeing the same old, same old.

Donna,
Wanting a log home since I was about 8 years old, I had no idea there were so many others that share that same dream. It's good to know that we have such a great resource to turn to when we start to build our home (soon I hope)!!!!
