Tell us about yourself:
My husband and I currently reside in Palatka, Florida. He's a Tug Boat captain and I'm a Domestic Engineer. We have three grown sons, Daniel, Jonathan, and Jonah. Our plan is to begin building our dream home in Bryson City, North Carolina early 2010 or as soon as Jonathan is finished with college.
Are you lucky enough to be living in a log home?
Will be soon!!

Got your email, thanks. I think you and I are on the same wavelength. Most of your comments are very much what is ether on my mind or what I'm planning to do.
Please keep in touch.

Good morning Ted! Honestly, we feel pretty lucky as we came across our lot purely by accident when looking at another. The house pad and septic tank permit were already in place. As this is the first time we've tackled building a home, we were just full of questions and truth be told a little frightened as we've heard horror stories on what to expect from contractors when trying to get work done. I have to say up to this point, everyone we've contacted (contractors, building depts. & inspectors) were friendly and helpful. Lesson learned - draw from your own experiences and if it's in God's will, all will work out! Yes, we have finalized our plans and our preliminary plans should be arriving any day now. After hours of research, through Log Home Design, Log home Living, Log Home Illustrated, etc., many visits to Log Home Shows, we've chosen "Golden Eagle" Log Homes. For our needs, they seemed to have the most complete package. As this will probably be our retirement home, one of the things we liked most about their package was the "Maintenance-free aluminum soffit, steel fascia and roof edge, with aluminum nails". The only thing we'll need to maintenance is what's below the roofline. Our representive is Joe Rodriguez from Craftworks Log Homes located in Westminster, SC. At this point, I can't say enough about the service Joe's extended to us. He even went as far as to allow us to stay in his Model home for the weekend when we drove up to meet with him and the builder. I hope you find this helpful. I wish you and your family all the best with your log home. We'll keep you posed.

Sorry Shelly, I did miss something. I made my comments purely from your photo section. Your schedule is much the same as ours. We plan to sell our house the end of 2009, get for it whatever the market will give us and start the construction process.
I see you are in Bryson City. Our land is just North of Waynesville. Being that you have already broken ground I assume that you have finalized house plans. Who is your cabin manufacturer? Have you filed for any permits yet? If so, is the process straight forward or did the bureaucracy drive you nutz?
Keep me posted as you progress and I'll do the same.

Shelley (and Shelley Martinez)...about retrievers. We just lost our Golden after nearly 14 years. A rough loss...but we adopted a two-year-old Yellow Lab from a rescue service. He's a sweetie and just a wonderful dog, especially with our kids.

I've owned both labs and Goldens. First, they're both amazing with kids. Second, all they want to do is make you happy. Goldens are mellower than Labs, but perhaps a little more obsessive (tennis balls, etc.), and I would say that Labs absolutely need a "job" every day, whether it's helping you chase shadows or squirrels. Whatever. The biggest mistake new retriever owners make is not realizing that these dogs are machines: they NEED to work out, like, all the time. Lots of energy to match their wonderful spirit. So get them outside to run, tumble and otherwise enjoy life.

I would never EVER own any other breed of dog than a Golden or Lab.

Good luck!

Hi Shelley - I had to say hello to you because 1. - we both spell our first names the same way and 2. My husband and I are looking to get a lab or retriever soon. Your dog is beautiful! All the best to you on your future dream log home!
