Adirondack Living & Rustic Shows

One of the most enjoyable things about living in a log home is the challenge of decorating and furnishing it the way we envision our perfect home.

You may be in the research phase of building your dream home, you may be comparing log home floor plans, you might be a log home owner or a representative of a log home manufacturer. Our Log Home Deck Refinished

If you have ever received a bid from a company to perform such a job, you probably choked at the price, but I can assure you that mid-way through the project I was ready to call for help. Those companies that specialize in log home renovation or maintenance earn their money.

Pressure Washing Logs & Deck (update)

This picture shows how ugly wood can be if left unattended. In my case, this wood is receiving a great deal of TLC & attention as it has just been pressurewashed and is now drying in the sun.

Log Home Maintenance - Restaining

I joke with my wife that we live the life of squirrels - it seems that almost everything we do is in preparation for the upcoming winter. No, we're not stockpiling nuts, but chores such as replenishing the firewood supply, driveway repair, log maintenance, caulking, etc. are fair weather projects. As our forward-thinking squirrel friends have shown us, now is the time for action.

Profile

Tell us about yourself:
My bride and I share our log home with four cats (2 inside & 2 outside) and one HUGE puppy, Lilly Belle, our very Great Pyrenees.  I am the founder and editor of the Log Home Directory. I have been avidly engaged in the log home and timber frame industry for a number of years through my websites (Loghomeology, Log Furniture Directory) and blog. We have three daughters and live in NW Montana in the shadow of Glacier National Park.
Are you lucky enough to be living in a log home?
Yes
2008, the winter without end!
We LOVE winter and all that comes with it, but we also like to see the seasons change eventually. This morning (April 23rd.) we awoke to another morning of 26 degrees and a new blanket of snow.

How's your vacation so far?

Me? I elected to cram my summer chores into one week... and I almost made it. We define "summer chores" as those projects we do to prepare for the upcoming winter. You know the drill, re-staining, wood repairs, fixing driveway cracks, storing firewood, etc., etc. My big project this year was to re-treat the horizontals - decking, railings, steps - those surfaces that take t… Continue

It was a cold, snowy morning in June...

Now that might sound like the opening line of a cheap novel and snow in June just doesn't compute, but that is exactly what I am looking at from my window. It has been snowing here in NW Montana for the past few hours and now it is starting to lay. Seriously, how many times have you fired up the woodstove in June? My daughter called from Washington, DC yesterday complaining about the oppres… Continue

Log Home Cats

That sounds like a song title from the Lovin' Spoonful (yeah, I know I'm showing my age), but IMHO no log home can be considered authentic unless there are one or more cats patrolling the property. I was NEVER a 'cat person'. I never owned one -- never wanted one... until I moved to the country. Without a doubt, Living in 'the country' means different things to different people and we… Continue

WWW - the Log Home Industry’s ‘Silk Road’ to China

Wow! What a pleasant surprise to find that my first post to this blog had 4 comments already… It looks like my statement, “a community of like-minded people interested in the same things” was on the money. Thanks to all, and based on Michael’s remarks, I think I need to clarify my thoughts on marketing log homes to China. (Please see Michael’s comments above) Michael, “giving up”? Me? Perish the thought! I absolutely agree with your observations, particularly about improvi… Continue

Anyone want to move to China?

As I begin to type these first few words, my brain screams… “NO, you do not want to start another project”! I’m sure you know that feeling and I’ll bet that your ‘To Do’ list is also lengthier than you would like it to be. Ignoring the urging from my left brain, the right hemisphere seizes control and I convince myself that getting involved with THIS blog will be different. These are all ‘log home people’, a community of like-minded people interested in the same things. Okay, now that I’… Continue

Tom, Rita H. again. I have a ?. I was in Loghome.com and went to Power Decor/Log Home Living. 11 must-follow tips(from HGTV pros)for decorating your home. There was a pic of a dining area. The draperies had what looked to be calf skin as valances and tie backs. I had a skin and tried it, and loved it. I don't know where I got the skin though, I've had it for awhile. I need three more. Can you direct me?

Tom,
HELP! I got the notice we were added to the directory, I added a reciprocal link to our site, and I can't find us in your directory now. Please advise. I looked in MD, and also under the Maintenance section. Neither shows us. :(

It really is interesting to me. After I wrote my little piece it occurred to me that I might be overreacting. I now live in Florida where there the land is as flat as in Kansas. The weather is much the same all year long and Christmas is celebrated in a bathing suit. No matter how bad the "incline" is in the mountains, Christmas feels like Christmas, the leaves are unbelievably beautiful in the fall, the nip in the air makes you feel that you are glad just to be alive.

Sure we need to be careful in our buying decisions but I for one am glad that I made mine.

Hi Tom and family,

Thank you for inviting me as a friend. What a beautiful home you have! What a pleasure it must be to both live in your dream home as well as work in the industry. This spring is very busy for us, and very exciting to have the opportunity to help people fulfill their log home dreams! Time for me to get back to work!! Mondays are always very active days for me here at WLH!

Thanks for your comments. I love the webinars because it gives such a good opportunity to speak with folks in the comfort of their own home. We have had very good success with these, and are developing new topics now.

Not all of us are "hillbillies" in WV, a few are still considered "mountain Williams" : )
