Glenn, I hope you make it back this way, Black Mountain is certainly a gem. We love living here. In fact we are building a new log cabin right now. Check out our blog site, I am blogging the experience at

Hope to be calling it home in just a few weeks.

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for the message. Based on the market, I would say that there are not much log homes in Topeka. We are looking for a home there but based on the informations I gathered here, it seems that the maintenance of a log home is quite complicated and not for people like us who don't know anything. :(

Hi Glenn,

Our log home is still on the drawing board, literally.  We have a first draft of a floorplan from R.C.M. CAD, have some changes we'd like to make to it, but it's on hold as we continue to try to sell the albatross in town.  At least we made the wise decision to sell first, build later.  If we got an offer on this house tomorrow, it would likely be 2013 before we could get the log home built.  Plans are still to build the garage first and live in it for a while.

Read the article. He indicated he used TWP Cedartone 101. It is not available anywhere near me. He said TWP by Gemini-Coatings was one of the top three choices in the Texas A&M study. Any idea what the other two top choices are? Maybe one of them is sold near me. I am in northern MN and would rather go directly to a retailer to pick up and not have to order and have product shipped from their warehouse in Michigan..

Are you still contemplating? Analysis paralysis?

HI Glenn. Do you think there would be any harm in letting my cabin go ice cold in the winter as long as all the plumbing was blead out, all the way to the main in the yard, and R.V. antifreeze in the traps ? My buddy keeps his place at 55 all winter, I have no desire to heat if I'm not there
