Condensation - Humidity

I have a 6 yr old 2100 sq ft log home in Vermont.  Condensation and ice is building up on the Pella windows and they are telling me it is all because of humidity.  The house runs about 40 - 45% humidity with a dehumidifier in the finished basement and one in the great room.  We cant stand the sound in the great room so i need a solution.  I am told a air/heat exchange system would take care of it but i would think running duct work etc in a log home is very difficult.  Any suggestions would…

Hi Jon, You'll need both and they should work together. The H.V.A.C installer will need to design the system and the carpenter will need to do the work necessary to install and conceal the duct work. It would be wise to get bids on the H.V.A.C because there needs to be calculations on the amount of cubic feed of air involved. Jim Harbin

Hello Jon. If all your windows are sweating you may need that system. If only some of them are sweating then, the glazing may have failed. Pella makes a pretty good window but,it may not be their top of the line product.

Expansion and contraction can cause seal failure and you might want to check into their warranty. We run ducts all the time in log homes and it requires additional carpentry. Good luck, Jim Harbin Katahdin Cedar Log Homes
