We finally got our home in WV.

It is a 25 year old log home, not sure of the style? Sticks and beam?? Maybe someone can educate me. We are VERY HAPPY in our home in Great Cacapon WV. We love being IN nature like this. Our home needs TLC on the outsede this spring as previous owners we elderly and let it go. What is best way to spruce it up? Protect it as well as improve its look?

Outdoor Spaces

It's cold here in Virginia! With the back-to-back blizzards a few weeks ago and some pretty bone-chilling temperatures and winds sticking around for the past few months, I'm definitely feeling the need to get some quality outdoors time, and I can't wait for spring to get here. I imagine I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Fortunately, log-home building makes it easy to bring the outdoors in. As I write this, we're in the middle of putting together the May/June issue of… Continue

Energy Audit

Has anyone else paid to have an energy audit performed on their "DREAM" house? If so what were the findings?

Selected a company and are ready to build.

We finally decided to go with Moosehead Cedar log homes as our company. We were very impressed with their professionalism and quick response time. We were actually very interested in another company at first however they had an awfull response time and were not very professional. Moosehead was willing to work with us through the entire process and also was able to offer the most inclusive kit for the price. We are now finalizing everything with the bank and will start construction in the…

Kiln Dried vs. Pressure Treated (?)

We are looking into a couple of companies for a log home in WV. I'm hoping to get some experienced input from folks that have purchased kiln dried and pressure treated homes. The dealer for kiln dried homes is closer to us but with such a large investment I am wondering if we would be better off dealing with the company that provides a 25 year warranty on their pressure treated logs.

We also need to find a list of log home builders :-/

Decisions, decisions!

Spinning the Color Wheel

We often get a lot of customer inquiries about the different color options used in the homes we feature, whether it's an interior paint choice, a unique stain or even a particular roofing material. It can be hard to determine what works best, especially without a handy swatch to really visualize the true color of such selections. (I know I personally went through eight samples of pale green for my kitchen alone--and that was using actual paint.) But the pros are here to help those of us in need… Continue

Leftover building materials

It's very difficult to build a home with no leftovers, and many homeowners end up with a big pile of unused building scraps after completing their home. If this sounds like you, one option you may want to consider is donating your leftover material to a Habitat ReStore, which is an outlet for Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization dedicated to building affordable housing for families in need. They accept usable building materials and sell them to the public at a reduced rate, and all… Continue

We have a 5-year old log home that has tons of air leaks between the logs! Can anyone suggest the fastest way to block them up? We've been stuffing insulation in between but that's tedious. Is there a foam spray that anyone can suggest that is safe for logs?

crushed glass media blasting

I want to buy a blasting machine and I don't want to spend 3500 to 4200 dollars on a commerical blaster. I have been researching other blasters through kramer industries and they show a blaster for log homes that runs aabout 1000 dollars. I ask him what the difference is between their blaster and say a kernel blaster and his only answer was the kernel is commerical. Does that mean the smaller and cheaper blaster will stuggle to get the job done or does it mean it will do it, but it it's just no… Continue
