Spring has sprung 2009.

So over the winter we have been just planning and saving. We decided that we will also run electric to the place as a backup / or use until we find better solar soloutions. We also decided that we will do this underground so I began researching and filling out forms for the power company. We also had to get a 911 address before we could do this so I got that in place as well. Did a little cutting / brush burning on the lot a couple weeks ago but still had quite a bit of snow. As of now the snow… Continue

To get a "log kit" or NOT??

My wife are in the early stages of our great adventure of having our dream log home built. Our dilemma is whether to buy a "log kit" or hire a log home architect designer and General Contractor builder to begin our process?? I am curious as to who out there has taken the latter road to there dream or know someone who has taken on the task of obtaining an architect designer and a General Contractor to build there dream log home. I am sure most of you out there has used one of the various… Continue

Log Cabin Neighbors

Our log cabin is our vacation home (a.k.a. 2nd home) in northern Michigan. For those of you not familiar with Michigan terms, if you are NOT from northern Michigan and you VISIT northern Michigan - then you are a Fudgie (cuz tourists like to buy fudge on Mackinac Island) or a trunk slammer (cuz when you drive up to the cabin after work on Friday, all the locals can hear you slamming your trunk after you've pulled up into your… Continue

Don't pay the ransom... I escaped!

It seems like its been about 3 years since I spent any time on this board… I cannot remember the last time I've been this busy - aren't we supposed to be sitting around doing nothing when the economy is this bad?

Spring is trying to make its way to NW Montana. This week we had a day of sunshine and 76 degrees - and the next day it snowed. Just about normal….

Oh well, time to get back to life in the fast lane in rural Montana :-)

Mark and Kathryn's Construction

Hello! Mark and I are new to this site. We saw it in one of the Log Home Magazines and thought it would be a good idea to connect with others that were loving their experiences with Log Homes.

We live in Colorado and bought 40 acres about 2 years ago right on one of Colorado's best fishing reservoirs. We started then building and we are about ready to put a roof on the first of two houses that will be where we live out the rest of our lives. We built the barn first so our horses would have… Continue

Researching complaints against log home manufacturers

My husband and I are getting close to deciding on a log home manufacturer. Before we make a final decision we want to do more research into them. I have checked the better business bureau - one company is not in their database which makes me want to investigate further, and as we are building in NY I checked the Attorney Generals database. I'd appreciate any information that might be available. Thanks

Ain't No Mountain High Enough...

After Mike's post last week, we were lucky enough to have four straight days of GORGEOUS weather here in northern Virginia. Sure, it's back to 50 degrees and drizzle now, but if this past weekend was any indication of what we have to look forward to, something tells me Old Man Winter is on his way out. It's about time!

To celebrate the warm temps and beautiful sunshine, my husband and I spent… Continue

Springtime, Anyone?

I love the impossibly blue skies of winter, the skeletons of trees in the woods, watching my kids do snow angels, etc. But, listen Old Man, you've overstayed your welcome.

In usually temperate Virginia yesterday, the temps were 45, skies looked like the dull side of aluminum foil most of the day, and cruel rain seemed to mock the calendar.

But today? Glorious. I finally think spring has won the battle and nudged the Old Man away.

I don't have… Continue

Log Home Construction Problems

I would like to hear from people that have had a bad experience with a log home manufacturer, builder, dealer, or bank. I think it is important to let the public know of any problems, so serious purchasers would know who to avoid! Thanks to all and

Checks and Water...

This is taken from my blog, and copied here, after seeing some of the discussions involving caulk:

All logs split or crack throughout the life of a log home. These splits or cracks are commonly referred to as checks. Checks are completely natural occurrences in logs. The question becomes Should I caulk the checks to keep water out, or leave them be. The following will discuss the pros and cons of both.…

Building a Log Home

My fiance and I are beginning to look for land to build our dream home. We have begun the research process and would appreciate any advice regarding builders to use in the Hudson Valley (New York) area, cost information, etc. We are starting from "square 1" ... we have an idea in mind but are practically clueless as to where to start, how much it will cost, etc.

A new feature for presenting my Log Designs..

I have never liked the computer generated Photo realistic presentations of prospective projects. In my opinion, they should still have the feel of creative possibility, not the polished unchangeable /settled look. Here is what I have come up with, what do you think?

BK Cypress vs. Suwannee River Log Homes

Anybody built a home from either of these? We have had problems getting BK Cypress to respond to our calls. We would like to build a log home out of Cypress but don't know which of these to go with.
