Timidly beginning

Several years ago, we had custom plans for a log home drawn up, but were unable to purchase land.  We now have several acres in central VA and will be looking to  start building next spring.  Anyone in the central VA area  own a loghome 4 BR or larger?  We are just starting to explore financing and are looking for comps.   Thanks.

Birds and bees and buds in the leaves

There is a flock of fat, overfed geese that putter around the pond we ride past on the way to the gym. Insistent ringing of the bikes' bells never moves them from the path, where they deposit large piles of goop. One day I think one will attack me as I ride by, just to assert its authority. Yesterday the bell got the attention instead of the great blue heron that was resting…

Young hearts of gold

Neil Young was in Richmond this weekend for a show. He was spotted at Plan 9 in Carytown pawing through the vinyl bins. It does sort of make you wonder what tunes Neil Young could find in a record store that he doesn't already own. It also makes you wonder why an aging hippie just won't let rock and roll die. Maybe it is a bit like wanting to live in an old log cabin. It…

Coming together, one step at a time

Hey all, just a quick update as to what's happening with us.  Other than keeping more than busy, just putting up with the rain.

But, we have made much progress since our last post.  We finally have all the heat down in the entire house.  As you can see in our newly added pics, we went with an above the subfloor radiant heat system on the first floor.  Its a really neat system.  It's made up of alumninum tracks in which the pex tubing is snapped in place.  It has plywood…

Log Repair & Maintenance Tip

One of Johnny Carson's catch phrases was, "I did not know that." I found myself repeating it at this winter's Log and Timber Home Show in Indianapolis. I got talking to exhibitor Jack Bowman of Wood Renovation Inc. because his company has fixed up a lot of log homes that are between 20 and 30 years old. These homes interest me because many date to when I started writing about log homes and because more and more of them have been coming onto the market lately. I'm curious to know how they've…

Bamboo theology

"You are an optimist," Richard called out, as he was getting into his car. "You mean a foolish optimist," I yelled back.

Cleaning interior Logs after building

I am in the middle of building a hand scribed saddle notched log home. The project started in the fall and has progressed through winter, and winter here in Central Wisconsin has been long, cold with plenty of snow, which has made for some dirty and marked logs inside and out. The exterior logs will be easier than the inside to clean. The dirt is one issue the other is the marks from the crane when the logs were lifted and stacked. I am looking for ideas for the interior cleaning, is the…

Final Floor

The VCU Rams had a great run up to the Final Four, but just couldn't overcome the size of the Butler Bulldogs. All of Richmond stopped to watch the game, and our disappointment in the score is only exceeded by our pride in the team. Both teams were beasts on the floor, playing with all their heart. I think there will be a lot of Rams pulling for Butler in the championship…
