Autumn is Coming: 4 Home Repairs to Make Before Fall

The fall and winter months can wreak havoc on a home. In many parts of the country, houses are exposed to extreme temperature swings, a lack of sunlight and moisture in the form of rain, ice and snow. What should you do now to prepare your home for the colder weather ahead?

Add Insulation Where Needed

Putting additional insulation in your attic, basement or siding can help to keep your home warmer throughout the year. If your current insulation is old or worn, it should be replaced as soon as possible. New insulation may also be better able to protect against pests that try to eat it.

Repair or Replace Your Furnace

A new furnace can help to reduce the amount of money that you spend on heating bills during the latter half of the year. It can also cost less to put in a new furnace as opposed to repairing your current one, and replacing it now ensures that you won’t be living in a cold house if it malfunctions later. However, if it is still under warranty, it can be beneficial to make a repair as it won’t cost you anything to do so.

Take Care of Your Roof

Missing or loose shingles can be signs of serious problems with your roof. At a minimum, you should have those shingles replaced before high winds and cold temperatures become a regular occurrence in your area. If you need help with roof repair work, don’t hesitate to call a professional. You can also find assistance by going to websites such as Hiring a professional may be ideal for more extensive projects as they have the tools and experience to do the job right and in a timely manner.

Don’t Neglect Your Pipes

A cracked pipe could burst if exposed to cold temperatures for a long enough period of time. If the pipe has water in it when it shatters, that water could flood your kitchen or basement. Therefore, make it a point to inspect your pipes and replace any that seem to be damaged in any way. Alternatively, you can call a plumber to your home to do the inspection and any needed repairs.

The fall and winter months are not an ideal time to make repairs to your home. Instead of hoping that nothing breaks after the weather makes a turn for the worse, schedule a service appointment to have your home’s major components inspected.
