At the end of a road in Minnesota’s rural St. Croix River valley, a cozy log cabin was in desperate need of an interior kitchen makeover. Extremely dated, crowded and dark, the kitchen lacked storage, function and rustic charm. With the help of Wisconsin Log Homes’ in-house interior designer and the DIY Network's show Sweat Equity, the homeowners were able to tackle the project and transform their kitchen into a stylish and practical space.
Refinishing the hardwood floors, staining the interior logs and cleaning the existing brick on the fireplace proved that the perfect backdrop for their new kitchen was there all along. Thoughtful design in the small space included keeping the L-shaped design, but adding a workable island and storage/message center along the back of the fireplace, opening up to a light-filled dining area. Adding texture and color, natural tile served as an ideal backsplash for the knotty hickory cabinets; abundant glass and iron lighting with classic appeal harmonized with the wood and brick to create the perfect rustic kitchen.
