The Log Home Neighborhood

An online log home community for log home enthusiasts.

Hello Everyone, I see folks saying they are talking to general contractors to get prices to build their log home. If they are not talking to a log home general contractor they are opening themselves up to all kinds of problems. Dealer/builders are the most qualified to do your project. Some dealers have general contractors that have experience with log homes who can save you money and time. You don't want your project to be a training ground for a contractor and neither does your bank.Pitfalls abound if your builder is using your home to learn log home building. The construction schedule can go right out the window and the quality can be lacking. Everything done on log homes is visible and needs to be done by craftsmen and women. If you are financing your project your lender will require a contractor to be qualified and licensed. The sooner you finish construction the sooner you can stop paying interest on your loan. Use experienced log home contractors and negotiate with them to get realistic numbers. I have bid against contractors who never built log homes and lost the contract because they were cheaper but, they couldn't finish the project for the quoted price and they had extras to the contract. Your dream deserves the best products and quality you can get. Don't talk to people with little or no experience simply because the price seems right. If you have to call someone like me to finish your home because your contractor can't make sure there is some money left in the budget.  Jim and Pam Harbin Katahdin Cedar Log Homes
