Got an Uneven Driveway? How to Straighten it up in a Cinch

An uneven driveway can present more problems to your house than just being unsightly. The steps that you need to take in order to repair the damage depend on the severity of the situation. Here are some tips that you can use in order to achieve a driveway that’s smooth and level.

Level It Out

A mortar based leveling compound could help to even out areas of your driveway that have sunk relative to other parts of it. A latex based leveling compound will flow more easily and spread so that you can get an even finish. Make sure to prep the area prior to applying the leveling compound. In most cases, this involves the use of latex based primer that will need to be applied to your existing driveway. This will ensure that the leveling compound will adhere properly without flaking back up.

Raise It Up

Another technique that you can use to get a level driveway is to invest in concrete lifting. This can be done in many different ways. One solution is to jack up the portion that’s affected and bring the substrate underneath back to level. Another solution is to drill holes in the affected areas of concrete and inject foam underneath. The holes can often be filled using the dust that was generated drilling out the holes mixed with mortar.

Use Pavers

Adding paving stones could change the look of your driveway. This solution works better if a whole segment is affected or if you want to redo the entire driveway. Mix the underlayment of mortar to different thicknesses in order to hide the fact that your driveway was uneven. As with the leveling compound solution, make sure to prep the concrete properly. You don’t want the pavers to start coming back up after your first winter with them in place.

Replace It

The easiest solution may be to just redo the entire driveway. This will allow you to tackle any major settling issues that have occurred to cause the unevenness in the first place. Consider adding in proper drainage and cutting in reliefs so that cracking issues will be less prevalent in the future. You may even want to look into sloping your driveway in a different fashion to prevent ponding that may have caused it to wear down.

You don’t have to live with an uneven and unappealing driveway. Use these ideas so that you can have a driveway that will enhance the curb appeal of your home.
