Keeping Cool: Ideas for Beating the Heat inside Your House

Summertime can be a lot of fun, particularly if you enjoy outdoor activities such as going to the beach, swimming, running, and hiking. One challenge, however, is the heat. If you are looking for ways to stay cool while indoors, read on.

Use Fans

Window, stationery, and ceiling fans do a great job of circulating air and keeping you cool. The trick is to be creative. If you have multiple fans in your windows, try turning some of them inside out so that they suck hot air out of the room. Similarly, you can set your ceiling fans to turn the opposite direction, drawing up and dispersing hot air.

Buy Cotton Sheets

There's nothing like cotton for keeping you cool, particularly at night. Cotton sheets and bedding are breathable and allow air to circulate around your body. In addition, they can wick moisture away, keeping you dry and allowing for a good night sleep.

Sip Cool Beverages

If you don't have a refrigerator icemaker, check to make sure all your ice trays are full at night before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, make up a large pitcher of iced tea or lemonade for sipping throughout the day.

Reduce Appliance Use

Avoid cooking meals on hot days and check out recipes for cold dishes online, or cook meals in advance and reheat them in the microwave. Keep in mind that other appliances, such as dishwashers and clothes dryers, also generate heat. Check out the weather report for cool evenings when running these machines is less likely to make your home unbearable.

Paint your Roof

Some experts recommend reflective roof paint to keep your home cool. You can do just the parts of the home that tend to get the hottest.

Plant trees: If you own your home, consider planting some trees to provide shade around your home. In addition to beautifying your lot, the trees provide a natural barrier between your home and the sun.

When All Else Fails

In some homes, the best way to keep things cool is through air-conditioning. While some folks prefer fresh air, there are times when heat can become unbearable and even dangerous. This is particularly true if you have family members who are very young, elderly or ill. Make sure you have a reliable company like Glendale Heating & Air Conditioning on hand if you live in a climate that requires air conditioning.

Summer is a great time to get outside and soak up the sun, but it’s also nice to have a cool retreat indoors when you’ve had enough. Use some of these tips to help beat the heat you’ll face this year.
